Grassroots campaign
Cynthia takes the term grassroots campaign literally.
Cynthia rode down Venice Avenue on a John Deere lawn
tractor. She and her entourage carried signs urging
people to vote for Kathrine Harris.
Venice was not her only stop. Hauling a trailer with
about 22 supporters from the Republican Club of South
Sarasota, the group headed for Sarasota.
"She just called us up and asked for volunteers, and here we are,"
said Barbara Hines, president of the club.
"The police got a call about the trailer yesterday, and by
the time we got there it disappeared from sight," Sgt.
Kevin McGrath said. "I can't tell you if it is illegal or not.
We don't get a lot of people riding in the back of a trailer."
The caravan plans to travel through the weekend, ending its trip on
the east coast.
"We may not stop until election day," Herelman said.
Her idea to ride a lawn tractor was not entirely politically
motivated.
"I want to bring back the Rosie the Riveter movement that 'women can
do it,' '' she said.
Herleman thinks that because there are only 14 United States
senators who are women, more female representation is needed in
Washington.
"I am only interested in the senators and I don't want to get
into the race for Congress," Herleman said when asked if she also
supports Christine Jennings.
Herleman and her group visited the gravesite of Harris'
father George Harris Jr. in Lakeland Thursday and then
paraded in front of the Citrus & Chemical Bank, where Harris's
father worked.
"We just wanted to honor George because he was a great man,"
Herleman said.
Herleman said Walt Harris, Katharine Harris's brother,
would be riding on the trailer in Bartow on Thursday evening.
"The lawn tractor and trailer was certainly not
orchestrated by our campaign," said Jennifer Marks,
spokeswoman for the Harris campaign. "This is the first we have
heard of it."
Jennifer confirmed that Katherine Harris and Walt Harris
were going to be in the Bartow area at the Polk County Farm
Bureau forum.
"Walt Harris is visiting this area, but we are not aware of
any participation in this type of parade," Marks said.
