Harvey is a one-time communications and public relations specialist
for the DuPont Co., in Wilmington and the calendar includes 'a visit'
with Herb Wessel whom Harvey says "is one of those rare,
multi-talented guys who can do anything, and do it well, whether he's
restoring an antique tractor, building a model airplane, or running a
demonstration at the Mason-Dixon Historical Society Steam & Gas
Round-Up every September in Westminster. He's been active with that
group going on 30 years."
Harvey writes: "This Maryland man is a Case enthusiast
through-and-through, and there's a computer in his head crammed with
facts about the J.I. Case Company and its many products. He has five
magnificent Case automobiles.
"Not everyone is aware that Case built cars early in the 20th Century.
Case had three race cars in the 1911 Indianapolis 500. Case autos were
impressive, but also expensive. Car production ended in the fall of
1926," he says.
"Herb has more than 50 tractors, plus an early Case steam engine. His
terrific tractor collection includes a representative sample of every
one Case built from the beginning through the 1960s.
"One of his favorites is the handsome 1918 Case 9-18, Case's first
small tractor. Nifty-looking, it is dark green with red wheels and
lots of striping. It had a cross-mounted, 4-cylinder engine, producing
9 drawbar hp. It made the cover of the 1994 Classic Farm Tractors
Calendar.
"Tractors are just a part of the Wessel story. There are many pieces
of equipment, stacks of manuals, Case promotional pieces, and just
about everything that ever carried the Case name and/or the famous
Case eagle logo.
"Plus, Herb has all kinds of dairy memorabilia such as hay forks,
cream separators, milk bottles - memories of their dairy operation.
"He scours auctions for horse-drawn equipment, buys it and puts it
under roof, saving it for posterity.
"Wood in old equipment rots in a hurry when left in a fence-row. If we
don't preserve it, we've lost a piece of our agricultural heritage,"
Herb said.
