Young Farmer & Rancher Achievement
Award
Young award winners were center stage in the awards
ceremony Thursday afternoon at Arkansas Farm Bureau's 72nd
Annual Convention in the Hot Springs Convention Center.
Robbie and Stephanie Bevis of Bevis Corner (Lonoke
County) bested 32 other couples to take home the 2006 Young
Farmer & Rancher Achievement Award as Farm Bureau's top
young farm-and-ranch family in the state. The Bevises have two sons,
Corey and Trey, and a daughter, Logan. They grow cotton, milo,
rice, soybeans and wheat and own a cow-calf operation.
The couple received a new Dodge 2500 4x4, four-door Cummins Diesel
pickup from Southern Farm Bureau Casualty Co. and $500 from Dodge.
The other state finalists for the Achievement Award were Dannie and
Robin Daughhetee of Proctor (Crittenden County) and Joe and Sarah
Haller of Magazine (Logan County). Both finalist-couples received
$1,000.
Tim and Wendy Moore of Harrison (Boone County) captured this
year's YF&R Excellence in Agriculture Award, presented to
young agriculturalists who derive the majority of their income from
non-farm sources. Tim is a vocational-agriculture instructor at
Valley Springs High School, and Wendy owns the Big Daddy's
Restaurant in Harrison. Additionally, the couple has a small cattle
and hay-baling operation.
The Moores were among 13 entrants vying for the honor. They received
a John Deere Gator utility vehicle from Farm Credit and Farm Bureau
Mutual Insurance Co., a John Deere riding lawn mower from Arkansas
John Deere dealers and John Deere Inc., and $500.
Jason Davis of Paragould (Greene County) topped 12 other
entrants to take this year's YF&R Discussion Meet. He won a year's
use of a new front-wheel assist Kubota tractor with front-end
loader, a Honda 500 ATV and $500.
The competition was a non-debate discussion intended to measure
contestants' abilities to present their views in a logical manner
and to think on their feet. Contestants examined topics such as
maintaining or expanding U.S. agriculture, the public's perception
of agriculture, and others.
In addition, all the Arkansas YF&R award winners received
expenses-paid trips to Salt Lake City, Utah, to represent Arkansas
in American Farm Bureau Federation's national YF&R competitions in
January.
Farm Bureau's Young Farmers & Ranchers program seeks to develop the
leadership potential and confidence of young Arkansans in
agriculture. Participation in the program is limited to those 35 and
younger.
